Bent, Verstovsek add honorable mention All-America honors

Waltham, Mass. – Brandeis University volleyball players after earning All-Association and All-Region honors Sydney Bent of Raleigh, North Carolinathe and Lara Verstovsek of Houston, TexasNamed an American Volleyball Coaches Association Honorable Mention All-American.

Bent and Verstovsek are the third and fourth All-Americans in Brandeis volleyball history. This is the first time the Judges have had an All-American Emma Bartlett ’20 2018 and marks the first time in program history with multiple All-Americans at the same time.

bent, a graduate transfer from Notre Dame, was honored as a right tackle. She was second on the team in kills per set (2.84 rpg) and led the team in digs (4.01 rpg), earning a reputation as one of the area’s best players. She also tops the team with 0.57 service aces per set, best in the Collegiate Athletic Association and 133rd in Division III. Bent’s digs average ranked eighth in the league, while her 3.7 points per set tied for fifth in the UAA and her 150 In D3. Bent was also third on the team with 45 blocks (0.45 blocks per set).

Overall this season, Bent had 14 matches with 10 or more kills and 19 matches with double-digit digs, totaling 11 double-doubles. Her season highs were 17 kills in a 3-2 win over Rochester in the UAA tournament seventh-place match and 28 kills in a 3-1 loss.rd– ranked Tufts. It was one of five 20-yard performances for Bent this season.

Verstovsek, a second-team All-UAA selection from outside last season, led the team and ranked third in the UAA with a 3.40 kills per set average. It was 10th-Best single-season average in Brandeis program history and tied for 94thth in all of Division III. She also finished third on the team with 27 service aces (0.33 ap) and fourth on the team with 37 (0.46 ap). Verstovsek led the team in scoring, averaging 4.01 points per set, third in the UAA and scoring 86 The NCAA is four points better than the streak in program history this season and seventh in a season.

Verstovsek had 13 matches with double-digit kills and eight matches with 10 or more digs, giving her six double-doubles on the campaign. Verstovsek posted 20 or more kills three times, including a career-high 24 in a 3-1 loss at Endicott College. Her career-best 25 digs came in a 3-1 win over Maine.

Brandeis volleyball finished the season with a 13-15 record, the second-most wins under a head coach. Alecia Bennett. They finished seventh in the UAA with a 3-2 win over Rochester on the final weekend of the season. Thirteen of the Judges’ 28 appearances came against teams that reached the NCAA Tournament, including wins over Johnson and Wales, Maine Maritime and Williams.
