When the 19th season – yes, it’s 1-9 – began on television this month, Grey’s Anatomy It has long established itself as a reliable hit, not only commanding a place in ABC’s prime time schedule, but other times in reruns. And part of what made it successful from the start, the relationship between the main character, Dr. Ellen Pompeo’s Meredith Grey, and Patrick Dempsey’s character, Dr. Derek “McDreamy” Shepherd, who left the cast in 2015.
On Tuesday, GrayCreator Shonda Rhimes explained that the way Meredith and Derek’s relationship started — they went home together after meeting at a bar — was problematic for some. At least Meredith’s reaction was. And they were not at all surprised to find out the next day that Derek was the new boss at what was then called Seattle Grace Hospital, where he lived.
“I remember being called to a room full of old people,” Rhimes said in the 9 to 5 with Skimm podcast, “and they brought us in to tell me that the show was a problem because no one would watch a show about a woman who would sleep with a man the night before her first day on the job. And they were serious.”
In fact, they asked, after reading the pilot episode, who would do something like that, like get drunk and hang out with strangers the night before starting a new job?
Betsy Beers, who is Rhimes’ producing partner on that show and many others, has volunteered to do just that. The answer to their question probably surprised them and caused them to panic.
“They couldn’t call me mysterious,” Beers said. “They don’t know what to say.”
The whole point is Beers and Rhimes, who worked together on the show a bad story, How to avoid murder SY Bridgertonnever saw a woman like herself on television.
“There haven’t been many performances by a woman in the midfield,” Beers said. “It was amazing.”
Rhimes said that she later understood why they got such reactions.
“It’s very obvious now, I think. But at the time, you have to remember that there had never been a show where actors had their sexuality on network television,” Rhimes said. “There wasn’t a show where you had three or four people of color in a room talking unless you were on a sitcom, there was no one else in the room. You didn’t see a lot of the things we did. And I didn’t think they were revolutionary. . I thought, ‘We’re just putting on a show that I want to see.’
Four Emmys and countless other awards later, they’re still here.
And the Meredith-Derek relationship that the men in Rhimes’ story did not appreciate has gone down in television history as one of the most beloved by fans. Just last month, the actors behind the game, Pompeo and Dempsey, met at the D23 Expo, where they took the mic of Yahoo Entertainment for a few laughs.
